I wish I knew one. I would imagine C++ is very useful.Java vs. C++
C++ would be I imagine.
Depends on what you want to program. Also depends on who you are coding with, since few commercial coding projects are done in isolation. C++ manages memory MUCH better than Java, but is very cumbersome for novices.
python, who can beat such a simple language to use. Many programs in linux use it!:)though it has it's problems, especially with memory.
They both have their strengths and weaknesses.. I personally prefer c++ :)
Depends on what's your objective for using it...I prefer java though.
C++ hands down. Java has it's uses. But overall C++, while not as easy to use, is almost always better to use.
All I can say is that I greatly prefer both over MATLAB, which is right up there with FORTRAN on the unintuitive-ness scale.
It's a tie between C and Python for me. I give Python the slight edge though, since I can write a program, run it, debug it, etc instead of having to waste time compiling. But most of the projects I work with use C...Java is just horrible, bloated, slow, clunky, and overall disgusting. Ruby has some potential, but I don't see any real use for it just yet with the exception for Rails. It's slower than most scripting languages out there, and that's bad since most are already slow to begin with.
Java is winning in the poll atm, but the generally buzz seems to lean towards C and C++... strange.
Is a class really neccessary to learn C++, or could it be done with a few books? Any book recommendations if it is the latter?

It depends on your personality dude.. some can do it quite easily, others can't. How dedicated you are also has a huge impact on your success.

Yes.. i always fall back on the textbook I used for one of my courses.. Here..
It's one of the few textbooks that I have really warmed up to..
I would go with C++, because thats what i program in. I'm programming windows APPS WOOT! I think C++ is pretty much the standard for video games anyhow. So i want to be a video game programmer, so i stick with C++, i heard Java is easier, but slower.

Awesome. If you want to take a quick peek at some of the text before you spend your money on it just pm me.
I only learned very basic C++ and Java, but I liked Java more.
C++ because its the only one I know.
