Why get married?

Just thought I'd create this thread to try and get opinions on why people think so many of us feel the need to get married. I'd like to have kids one day, but don't feel like I want to make an impossible promise to love somebody until one of us drops dead. I know I have duties to any children I have regardless of my marital status. I also don't like the fact that married couples still get tax benefits in some countries, as it just seems to be a way of promoting unthinking conformity. What constitutes a good reason to you or is marriage senseless? Why get married?
It's more of a cultural and symbolic thing than anything, I couldn't care less about religion, or Christianity for that matter. Would I like to get married? If I ever find a partner I'd like to spend my time with, yes. It's a.. I don't know, just seems like it's the final goal. Other than a successful marriage of course. Why get married?
I don't really see a point aside from legal benefits.I know first hand that love and marriage are not the same thing.
In my opinion, you marry someone as a symbol to that person that you love that person so much that you pledge to commit yourself to them. It's a symbolic gesture that demonstrates love, happiness, togetherness, mutual respect, and good communication.
marriage promotes some form of stability.
You don't have to but if you want to procreate it helps to have a partner.
Because it a Holy Christian Sacrement through which two people of opposite sex are united and become one in God.

It shows that you'd be willing to ''tie the knot,'' so to speak and pledge yourself to a partner.  I personally don't think it's necessary.  People can live perfectly happy lives together and raise families without being married.  Although, the benefits that come along with it are definitely a plus.

Because it a Holy Christian Sacrement through which two people of opposite sex are united and become one in God.
Well that's great.
Would you rather people **** everyone creating lots and lots of children, maybe starving children.
Would you rather people **** everyone creating lots and lots of children, maybe starving children. i don't know why, but i didn't expect this much negativity towards marriage. i'm getting married next Spring. I have wanted to find that one person to spend the rest of my life with since I was 25 (I'm now 28 ).To me, it's about having someone at your side to share in your adventures and experiences. To share in your triumphs and help ease the defeats. I can't really describe it, but now that I am with Melissa I feel stronger... like I am capable of more.Neither of us are interested in children. They're noisy, they're messy, and they're a drain on your income. Who needs that? So marriage isn't just for breeders.
I think for a lot of people it's symbolic. If you're able to commit to someone, it shows a certain level of maturity, and the ability to commit to other things in life... a career, a mortgage, or (if you want them) a family.

I would get married so I won't feel lonely because I've lived a lonely feeling life. I want to make sure I can stick with someone for the rest of my life so I have someone to trust. There's not many people you can trust in this world, so marriage seems natural to me. I think, however, many people aren't like me and could care less about sticking with someone, so if you're going to get married you should think long and hard about it. Marriage is either for you or not for you and getting married could make you either less or more miserable.
Yeah, that's what I'm getting at. I can't really work out what the benefits are. Are there still tax incentives in your country?
I'm honestly not sure what the all of the benefits are.  I know there are several insurance benefits, though.

Rather than creating children with whomever they want at any time. Monogomous, with 1 women and 1 man, marriage is especially beneficial for men because it keeps society stable. I'm sure you heard why muslim men kill themselves for 900 or so virgins.
